After Wisdom Tooth Removal

Immediately Following wisdom tooth removal surgery:

  • The gauze pad placed over the surgical area should be kept in place for at least an hour. You can change the gauze every hour until the bleeding has slowed down then you can remove and discard it.
  • Vigorous mouth rinsing or touching the wound area following surgery should be avoided. This may initiate bleeding by causing the blood clot that has formed to become dislodged.
  • Take Ibuprofen (Advil) or the prescribed pain medications as soon as you get home BEFORE the local anesthetic starts to diminish and you begin to feel discomfort.
  • Restrict your activities the day of surgery.
  • Place ice packs to the sides of your face where surgery was performed. Refer to the section on Swelling for an explanation.

After Dental Implant Surgery

Important Care after Dental Implants Surgery:

  • DON’T RUSH IT. Allow time for recovery after dental implants surgery. Recovery time varies from patient to patient but in general, practitioners allow six months for healing between the first and second procedure.
  • BRRRR! For the first 24 to 48 hours after dental implants surgery, apply an ice pack to your face. It might feel cold but the ice pack will help reduce swelling and bruising.
  • BE A COUCH POTATO! Take it easy for 48 to 72 hours after dental implants surgery. Slip into your favorite pajamas and curl up in front of the TV because it’s definitely time for some rest and relaxation. Make sure to keep your head elevated while you catch up on your favorite shows.
  • EAT SOMETHING ALREADY! It’s okay to eat after dental implants surgery. When you are hungry, start with clear liquids like broths or soups then move on to soft foods and slowly work you way up to regular food. This is the time to eat as much ice cream as your heart desires.
  • SAY YES TO H20! It is important to drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated after dental implants surgery, but do not drink liquid through a straw. This creates suction and may cause tension on your stitches, which can interfere with healing.
  • DITCH THE BUTTS! Do not smoke after dental implants surgery. Smoking, like drinking through a straw, causes suction and can rip out your stitches.
  • Get on the Wagon. Do not drink alcohol for one week after dental implants surgery. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics or analgesics to decrease the risk of infection and to manage your pain. Mixing these drugs with alcohol can be harmful.
  • TEA REMEDY. After dental implants surgery, if you have excessive bleeding, bite down on a wet tea bag for about 30 minutes. The tannic acid should help stop the bleeding. If the bleeding persists, call your doctor immediately.
  • OBVIOUSLY! After dental implants surgery, be sure to take your medications as prescribed.
  • PERMISSION REQUIRED. It may take up to six months after dental implants surgery for your jawbone to heal. Do not wear your implant until your doctor has adjusted it and given permission.

After Root Canal Procedure

Important After Root Canal Procedure Care Info.

  • Please do not chew or attempt to eat on the side of your mouth that has been worked on while this area is still numb.
  • You may want to put an ice pack over area where the procedure was done for 1/2 hour when you first get home to minimize swelling. Apply the ice pack (or use frozen vegetables like peas) every hour for 10-15 minutes during the first 4-6 minutes.
  • Sleep with your head in an elevated position for the first few nights if you do not have any physical limitations.
  • Eat a soft diet for at least two days and remember not to chew on the treated side. Avoid very hot or cold foods during the healing process.
  • We recommend you take something for pain-relief within one hour of leaving our office, to get the medication into your blood system before the anesthesia we administered begins to subside. Generally, only one dose is needed. We recommend ibuprofen (Nuprin, Advil, Motrin)-800 mg (four tablets). Two to four tables may be taken four times a day for the next 3-4 days to help control the sensitivity in this area. If you have a medical condition or gastrointestinal disorder which precludes ibuprofen, acetaminophen (Tylenol, Excedrin) is a substitute, although it does not contain anti-inflammatory properties, Aspirin and aspirin-containing products are NOT advisable, as they tend to increase bleeding from the area that was treated.
  • Please take prescribed medication (antibiotics and /or pain medication) as directed. If you are given Penicillin VK take 2 pills every 4 hours for 48-72 hours, then complete prescription taking 1 pill very 6 hours. Please take the full course of antibiotic medication. If you were given a prescription for pain, it is meant to help you with more serious discomfort only for a couple of days. Refer to pain control article
  • Whenever possible, try to chew on the opposite side from the tooth we have just treated, until you have a crown place. Until that time, your tooth still is weakened and could fracture.
  • Do not smoke during the first 24 hours and minimize the number of times you smoke during the remaining healing process because smoking delays the healing process. Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Please avoid crunchy or hard foods which could cause the tooth without a crown to fracture.
  • Frequent rinsing with warm salt water for the next two days
  • We recommend you take something for the increased sensitivity in this area within one hour of leaving our office, to get the medication into your blood system before the anesthesia we administered begins to subside. Generally, only one dose is needed. We recommend ibuprofen (Nuprin, Advil, Motrin)-two to four tablets, which may be taken four times a day if needed. If you have a medical condition or gastrointestinal disorder, which precludes ibuprofen, acetaminophen (Tylenol, Excedrin) can be a good substitute, although it does not contain anti-inflammatory properties.

Instrucciones Post-Operatorias

INSTRUCCIONES POST-OPERATORIAS
