What is Invisalign?

Wires and brackets were the chief components of orthodontic treatment for years. Although braces that use wires and brackets are still effective, they're definitely noticeable. The Invisalign system, on the other hand, offers a different approach.

Instead of attaching metal or ceramic brackets to your teeth and threading wires through them, your Miami dentist gives you a series of aligner trays that you'll wear over your upper and lower teeth. These aligner trays are designed to correct your orthodontic issues and are custom-made for you by the Invisalign company. The Invisalign system offers several benefits, including:

  • Wire-Free Appearance: Invisalign aligner trays are made of clear plastic to ensure that no one but you has to know that you're improving your smile.
  • No Oral Discomfort: Stray brace wires can lead to the occasional mouth sore or cut. Luckily, that's a problem you don't have to worry about with Invisalign.
  • No Change to Your Usual Routine: You'll remove your trays when you eat, drink anything other than water, play sports, and brush/floss your teeth. With Invisalign, you won't need to follow strict food restrictions, purchase special sports guards, or spend 10 minutes in the bathroom when you brush your teeth. You can even take your trays out occasionally if a special event is on your calendar!

How does Invisalign straighten teeth?

If you have traditional braces, your dentist adjusts the tension of the wires periodically to gradually move your teeth. Although adjustments are a necessary part of the process, they can cause a little discomfort for a few days if you wear metal or ceramic braces.

Adjustments aren't required with Invisalign. this is because each aligner tray in the series that you receive has been custom-made to slightly change the position of your teeth. After two weeks, you'll swap out the set for a new set designed to accomplish a different straightening goal.

The number of trays you receive will depend on the severity of your orthodontic problem. In some cases, your orthodontic treatment may only take about a year, but if you have complicated orthodontic issues, you may wear the trays for up to two years or longer.
